The Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded major successes in its fight against drug trafficking and abuse, arresting 559 suspects and securing 128 convictions over the past 11 months.
State Commander Charles Onubogu disclosed this on Wednesday in Awka during a press briefing ahead of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26.
According to him, the suspects comprising 475 men and 84 women were apprehended for various drug-related offences, while the command seized approximately 1.8 tonnes of illicit substances, including cocaine, methamphetamine, and cannabis.
“Since assuming office about 11 months ago, we have confiscated more than a tonne of various illicit drugs. In total, about 1.8 tonnes of illegal substances have been recovered. We have also arrested 559 suspects and secured 128 convictions within the period,” Onubogu said.
He further revealed that 102 individuals struggling with substance abuse, 99 males and three females, underwent rehabilitation and were enrolled in vocational training programmes such as soap making and tailoring to aid reintegration. The command also provided counselling and intervention services to other drug users.
Onubogu reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to disrupting the drug supply chain through arrests, investigations, and prosecutions, while also addressing demand through awareness campaigns, counselling, and rehabilitation. He stressed that drug users should be viewed as individuals in need of support rather than criminals.
“Our primary targets are drug traffickers and dealers. Drug users often require help, guidance and rehabilitation,” he said.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persistent Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses”, Onubogu emphasised collective action, urging the media, civil society organisations, and the public to join the fight against drug abuse. He also announced plans for a road walk and awareness activities to mark the global campaign in Anambra.
Meanwhile, NDLEA recently uncovered a multi-billion-naira clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Oyo State, arresting five suspects, including a Mexican national allegedly recruited to provide technical expertise for the illegal operation.
