The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the National Poverty Intelligence Lab (NPIL), a data-driven platform designed to strengthen the planning, implementation, and evaluation of poverty reduction programmes.
Unveiling the initiative at a three-day workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, described the NPIL as the “intelligence backbone” of Nigeria’s poverty reduction architecture. He explained that the platform will serve as a central evidence-gathering hub, providing critical data to improve the design, targeting, and monitoring of interventions aimed at lifting an estimated 140 million Nigerians out of poverty.
Doro stressed that Nigeria’s poverty crisis can no longer be addressed through fragmented policies or assumptions, noting that previous efforts were weakened by poor coordination and politically driven decisions. “For many years, our interventions have been driven by assumptions rather than evidence, sometimes by politics rather than data, and by silos rather than systems. The NPIL changes that. It gives us the analytical infrastructure to ask the right questions, find credible answers and hold ourselves accountable for results,” he said.
The minister emphasised that tackling poverty requires robust systems, intelligence-driven policymaking, and coordinated action across all levels of government. He added that the Lab will provide analytical support for policy formulation, programme implementation, resource allocation, and performance measurement.
The Federal Government expects the NPIL to improve transparency, enhance the effectiveness of anti-poverty programmes, and ensure that resources are directed to the Nigerians who need them most.
