Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigeria Police Force for bringing in the father of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who presents himself as Director-General of the non-existent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Speaking on Arise News on Tuesday, Falana, who is counsel to Adeyemi, said there was no legal basis for taking the senior citizen to a police facility.
“The reported arrest of Mr Adeyemi’s father cannot be justified under the Constitution, under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and under the Nigeria Police Act,” Falana stated.
He explained that he was later contacted by officers in Abuja who clarified that the man was not formally arrested but invited to assist with investigations. According to him, the elderly man voluntarily made a statement and was released alongside another relative who had been picked up.
Falana argued that the police did not need to bring Adeyemi’s father to a station to obtain his statement.
“Whichever way it is, if the police officers involved had wanted the father of Mr Adeyemi to assist them in their investigation, they should have taken his statement in his house and not in a police station. I do hope that this will not repeat itself,” he said.
Adeyemi is facing an eight-count criminal charge of forgery, conspiracy, and impersonation at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He was first arrested on October 27, 2025, and detained for 23 days before being granted administrative bail on health grounds. He was charged in court on November 27, 2025, but proceedings have since been stalled due to repeated adjournment requests by the defence team.
The suspect has reportedly gone into hiding ahead of his next scheduled court appearance.
