The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has felicitated with Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, following her election as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her victory as a groundbreaking moment for both the legal profession and for women in leadership roles across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, she observed that Badejo-Okusanya’s emergence as the first woman to be democratically elected to head the NBA shows that “competence, integrity, resilience and visionary leadership are not defined by gender.”
The Council noted that the victory is not only a personal achievement for the president-elect, but also a major breakthrough for Nigerian women and young professionals seeking to overcome barriers through diligence, commitment and merit.
The statement further drew parallels with developments within the FCT Council of the NUJ itself, where Grace Ike recently became the first female chairman in the Council’s 43-year history. It described both appointments as proof that Nigeria’s professional bodies are increasingly open to inclusive, merit-driven leadership.
“The emergence of two women to lead two of Nigeria’s foremost professional bodies within such a short period is a powerful statement that the nation’s institutions are increasingly embracing competence and excellence above all else.
“We believe these achievements will inspire a new generation of women to aspire to leadership and contribute meaningfully to national development,” the statement said.
The Council also lauded the NBA for its consistent efforts in upholding constitutional democracy, promoting the rule of law, safeguarding fundamental human rights, and advancing justice in the country.
It expressed optimism that under Badejo-Okusanya’s stewardship, the NBA would deepen public confidence in the legal profession, build on past gains, and drive reforms to enhance the administration of justice.
It further pledged to deepen partnership between the media and the legal community in advancing democratic governance, accountability, press freedom, human rights and the rule of law.
In the statement, the council wished the NBA President-elect a productive and impactful tenure, expressing hope that her administration would be remembered for transformational leadership, professional excellence, and creating greater opportunities for upcoming lawyers and women leaders.
