The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, has called on the Federal Government to issue a formal apology, provide compensation, and pursue genuine reconciliation over his killing during the July 1966 counter-coup.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, family head Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi said: “The family needs apology. The family needs to be compensated. We need sincere reconciliation.” He described the late General as a patriotic and inclusive leader who was killed for a crisis he did not create.
