FCT Police Detain Officers Accused of Extorting N40,000 From Resident

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has identified and detained officers accused of allegedly extorting ₦40,000 from a resident along the Wuye-Utako Road, near Salem Church, Abuja.

The officers were traced after a video circulated on social media showing a man alleging that despite having his documents in order, a police officer collected ₦40,000 from him. The video, which began trending around August 24, 2026, also displayed a receipt and a conversation between the complainant and the officers when he returned to the checkpoint.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the officers depicted in the video have been identified and are now in custody. According to the complainant, the incident occurred on August 20, 2026.

The Command has invited the complainant to its headquarters to make an official statement to aid investigations and disciplinary proceedings. Adeh urged him to reach out through 07038979348 or 08180382808.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, reiterated that the Command will not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct, or other forms of unprofessional behaviour. He assured that any officer found culpable will face disciplinary and legal action.

The Command also appealed to residents to report cases of police misconduct. This latest case follows earlier warnings against extortion. In June 2026, Sanusi cautioned officers against extorting tricycle and motorcycle operators, while in July, four officers were detained and tried after mounting an unauthorised checkpoint and extorting ₦52,000 from ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu, SAN.

This development underscores the Command’s ongoing crackdown on corruption and misconduct within the police force.
