The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Benue State MACBAN Chairman, Alhaji Ardo Risku, and his aide.
In a statement released by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described the attack as senseless and a direct assault on the fragile peace and trust communities in Benue have been rebuilding. He noted that the timing was particularly troubling, coming amid visible security improvements and better relations among the state’s ethnic, religious, and cultural groups.
Akume warned against “fifth columnists” seeking to derail progress made through dialogue and sacrifice. Stressing that unity and peaceful coexistence are non-negotiable, he said real development, investment, and jobs can only thrive where tolerance and mutual respect exist. He urged communities to reject covert efforts by criminals to stir up hatred and revenge, reminding citizens that justice must not be taken into their own hands.
The SGF extended condolences to Risku’s family, MACBAN leadership, and all affected, while directing the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other security agencies to launch a thorough probe and ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. Drawing parallels with the Yelwata killings, he said just as suspects in that case were caught and are now facing trial, those behind Risku’s murder must face full legal consequences. “Every Nigerian life is sacred. Those who think violence and murder can destabilize peace should know there’s no hiding place. Justice must be done, and it must be seen to be done,” Akume stated.
He also reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fighting insecurity nationwide, praising him for equipping security and intelligence agencies with resources to keep Nigeria safe.
The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) also denounced the murder, with Director-General Dr. Joseph Ochogwu describing Risku as a dedicated advocate for dialogue among Benue’s diverse groups. He said the killing was a major setback for reconciliation efforts in the state.
Meanwhile, Benue Police Commissioner CP Cletus Nwadiogbu confirmed that 10 suspects were arrested on the night of June 27, 2026, during tactical operations in Otukpo. Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet added that investigations into the killing of Risku and his associate, Yakubu Isah, are ongoing.
