Veteran Nigerian singer John Odafe Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey, has announced a seven-day series of events to mark his 56th birthday and five decades of performing on stage, scheduled for August.
The “Galala” icon revealed the plans during an appearance on the Tochi Talks Diaspora podcast, explaining that activities will kick off in the same week as his birthday on August 4.
“Celebrating 50 years on stage, I am looking at August. My birthday is August 4. That week of my birthday, a lot of things will happen. We will have a show in Ajegunle on August 8, and on the 9th, we will have one at Eko Hotels. That would be for everybody,” he said.
Born in August 1970 and raised in Ajegunle, Daddy Showkey rose to fame in the early 1990s and became one of Nigeria’s most influential music figures. He is widely celebrated for popularizing the Galala dance style and for songs that explore themes of romance, faith, and social issues.
Among his most popular tracks are Fire Fire (1991), Diana (1996), The Name (2000), Ghetto Soldier (2011), and Jehovah (2011).
The week-long programme is designed to celebrate his remarkable journey in the music industry and provide fans with an opportunity to honour his enduring career.
