The Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) has pledged to deepen collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to tackle the rising challenge of drug abuse among Nigerian youths.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by an NDLEA delegation to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maryam Ismaila Keshinro, commended the Agency’s proactive approach and stressed the need for joint action:
“There is so much to do with your proposed programme, and the Ministry is looking for a way to join in the fight against this menace.”
She called for stronger inter-agency collaboration, including screening and sensitisation of young people entering public service, and announced that NDLEA will participate in the Ministry’s planned Youth Confabs in October 2026.
Representing NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Director of Counselling, Treatment and Rehabilitation, ACGN Muhammed Bashir Ibrahim, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment:
“The fight against drug abuse requires a coordinated and sustained approach involving government institutions and other relevant stakeholders, particularly given the vulnerability of young people to the dangers associated with substance abuse.”
He added: “…this partnership will strengthen platforms for prevention, awareness creation, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation, and empower youths to make healthy and productive choices.”
Highlighting the mental health dimension, Director of Youth Mental Health and Psychosocial Department, Mr. Emmanuel Essein, noted: “…greater attention to the mental and emotional well-being of young people is critical to building a healthy, productive and resilient youth population.”
The Ministry assured that it will continue working with NDLEA and other stakeholders to expand sensitisation campaigns and support systems for Nigerian youths.
