The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed talks about a possible presidential ambition in 2031, saying his attention is fully on the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso said he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are focused on preparing for the next election and working on plans they believe will improve the country.
He described his relationship with Obi as strong, noting that both men are united by a common goal for Nigeria. “Discussions about who may contest the presidency in 2031 are unnecessary at this stage because our immediate priority is to win the 2027 election,” he said.
Kwankwaso explained that decisions about future elections would be made when the time comes and would depend on the political situation at that period. He added that while the party already has medium and long-term plans for Nigeria, its current efforts are centred on delivering its strategy for the 2027 polls.
His comments come amid growing speculation about the NDC’s leadership beyond 2027 and political discussions over the party’s preparations for the next general election.
