Media and Public Advocacy, a coalition of civil society groups advocating peace, security, and good governance, has commended the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, for securing hundreds of convictions in high-profile cases involving terrorism, terrorism financing, armed banditry, and cybercrime syndicates.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, the group noted that the convictions address the challenge of prolonged detention without trial in Nigeria’s criminal justice system. “For decades, wealthy syndicates frustrated high-profile criminal trials through deliberate delays. Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has introduced a no-nonsense, efficient prosecution system that has overhauled federal cases,” the statement read.
The coalition emphasized that prosecuting suspects held in custody for years demonstrates judicial accountability and strengthens human rights under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. It highlighted that securing over 600 convictions in a short period reflects a meticulous, evidence-based approach to justice delivery.
According to the group, the AGF has tightened prosecution files, improved coordination between the Ministry of Justice and agencies such as the EFCC, ICPC, and DSS, while shielding state prosecutors from political interference.
Media and Public Advocacy expressed optimism that concluding terror-related cases will boost public trust in justice institutions and deter criminal gangs fueling insecurity. “By securing prison sentences for these individuals, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has sent a clear message to international observers and local critics that Nigeria is no longer a haven for impunity,” the group stated.
