The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, has reassured residents that the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin remains safe following a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast that triggered brief panic in the area.
Addressing journalists at the scene, Tijani explained that the police swiftly deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives after receiving reports of the explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched, with experts confirming that no additional devices were found.
Preliminary findings revealed that the IED had been planted under the passenger side of a vehicle and detonated when the engine was started. Remnants of the device have been recovered for forensic examination as investigations continue.
Tijani urged residents and traders to remain calm, dismissing rumours of widespread insecurity in Lagos as false and misleading. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning criminal elements to steer clear of the state.
Community leader, Baale of Oke Mushin, Mr. Tajudeen Faronbi, recounted that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. He immediately contacted security authorities, leading to the deployment of about 35 officers and backup units to secure the area. Their swift response helped prevent panic and ensured residents’ safety.
The identity and ownership of the vehicle remain unclear, but police investigations are ongoing.
