The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has called on cement manufacturers in Nigeria to reduce the price of cement, warning that the rising cost of the commodity is putting pressure on infrastructure projects and triggering demands for contract reviews.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new corporate identity of Lafarge, now rebranded as HBM (a member of the HUAXIN Group) in Lagos, Umahi said the Federal Government will begin discussions with cement producers from July 1 to address the persistent increase in cement prices.
“I want to insist that Lafarge, now HBM, and other manufacturers of cement should reduce their prices,” Umahi stated, noting that contractors handling government projects have continued to seek upward reviews of contract sums due to escalating material costs.
He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is investing heavily in infrastructure development nationwide, creating significant opportunities for manufacturers and investors. Umahi encouraged HBM and other producers to expand production capacity to meet the growing demand generated by ongoing road and bridge projects.
Commending HBM’s transition and continued investment in Nigeria, the minister assured the company of government support and partnership. He cited the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a major example of the administration’s commitment to national development, describing it as a project that has attracted international recognition for quality and innovation.
Umahi expressed confidence in the administration’s vision for economic growth and infrastructure renewal, praising President Tinubu’s leadership. “Mr President is committed to retaking this country. The vision and mission are achievable, and we are on course. This country will be taken back for the good of Nigerians,” he said.
